A renovation at this large house in Wahroonga (in Sydney’s North Shore) included updating the interior colour scheme. Opening up the space created a large open plan kitchen, dining and living area at the rear of the house. The owners wanted a scheme that would provide a neutral backdrop for their colourful art and furnishings. It was also important to create elements of interest and contrast between the various living areas.
The colour palette is a simple and classic scheme of white, a neutral sand, a deep charcoal and black. There are hits of black or charcoal in all the three living areas, which ties these spaces together.
The kitchen cabinetry is a classic black and white look, with the black island base topped with white quartz. The kitchen cabinets are a glossy white, going back to black for cabinets in the butler’s pantry. Using a sand colour on the walls in the open plan kitchen area complements the travertine tiled floor which provides a neutral base. The bathrooms also use the travertine and charcoal combination, with interesting hexagonal tiles used on the walls.
Using black on the walls in the formal lounge room provides a sense of drama, providing a high contrast with the white trims. It creates a perfect backdrop for the colourful artworks with their gold frames. The client’s favourite colour is red and they have a great collection of red sofas, artworks and accessories (including a bright red antique petrol pump). The exterior trim colour is Dulux Cave Man, so when we talked about a colour to use in the large basement games room, this was a perfect fit for a family of boys.
The end result of the new interior colour scheme gives this Wahroonga house a mix of calm and contrasting family spaces.

Updating the exterior of this house was one of our previous projects. It was important to ensure we created a cohesive look and feel from outside to inside. See those photos here.
